Gender roles within a society influence cultural development by placing males and females in specific social roles. For example, in many countries women are still deprived of basic rights like the right to vote because of the social view of their gender role. Some societies see the role of the woman as one that should be inside of the home rather than in the workplace. Even in the U.S. gender roles hvae changed over time. Within the last 100 years the role of women has changed from one of primary care giver to a more broadly defined role. Unlike many other societies, women's rights to play whatever role they choose are evident in the U.S.
