Some therapists seem to consistently use one method while other therapists are more ectectic and choose methods based upon what they are confronted with by the patient. I basically use one type of model, maybe two, but that model allows me to use a large number of techniques. I discuss various techniques with patients and together we choose which technique we will use. An early research study that I learned in school was that various techniques and methods were all found to be effective, the crucial factor was that the patient BELIEVED in the method. Patient belief is exremely important and the psychologist often finds that he has to sell the method to the patient. Therapists good at convincing patients they have the answer can use one method. I am not that convincing and I believe negotiation can produce the same commitment, because the patient has an interest in making his/her choice effective.
